I spent yesterday with Michelle at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. She and two other nice ladies were volunteering at a booth about parrots for Phoenix Landing. The theme of the day at the Museum was “A Day in the Tropics.”
There was a jenday conure there. For a little bit, he was making a little noise. I know they have the reputation for being loud, so I tried to see if I could be louder!
Guess what?! Hands down, I clearly won!
Michelle pointed out to people who came rushing over to see who was making all the noise that jenday conures have the reputation for being loud, and pionus parrots are known for being quiet birds, suitable for apartment living. I proudly let out a shrill squawk when she said that, and watched people’s eyes get big.
Hey, we can choose to be quiet. We can also choose to be loud when we want to, though!
I am parrot! Hear me squawk!

Good for you Django. People definitely should know that “quiet” is all relative, and that even quiet birds can be very, very loud. I have a very loud, shrill scream that could make your ears bleed. It sounds like nails on a chalkboard. I don’t make that sound very often, but I always chime in with my own loud squeaks whenever my sun conure roommate squawks. Squawk Squawk Squeeeeeeak! we harmonize together.

I have a blue headed pi and a jenday, and in general she’s a fairly quiet jenday. I’d say when they both want to yell, they are about even. Her ‘jungle shriek’ /alert sound can knock the socks off just about anything, though- and i think it’s louder, and definitely more piercing the Zu’s yell/bark/crying (which is when he’s loudest). He very occasionally will do a piercing single note when he’s alarmed, but it doesn’t compare to the jungle scream, sorry. Of course, neither of them generate the noise my hahn’s does for sheer quantity…
