Tired of My Travel Cage

Oh boy, what a couple of weeks I’ve had. My human agreed to house- and dog-sit for some friends and Stewie and I went along for the ride.

We watched my human run around like a crazy person trying to take care of 5 animals! All three of the dogs were senior, and two of them had special needs and needed additional and separate attention.

In fact, we didn’t get to see too much of the human because she was always running around trying to take care of the dogs, force feeding them pills and cleaning up their smelly poops. Thank goodness we got our own room (nothing like the special “bird room” that Django and Gillie have though), which the dogs weren’t allowed into.

The first couple of days Stewie and I had to stay in our travel cages, but then our big cages came up and that helped a lot. If we weren’t going to get a lot of out-of-cage time, at least we had lots of room to spread our wings in our regular cages.

I have a playtop cage that has a long perch that runs lengthwise at the top and a toy hook that attaches on one end. I never stand on the perch though… I just like to run around the top of the cage underneath the perch and play hide-and-seek in the corners and behind toys. Sometimes I like to climb on top of the toy hook and wait for my human to announce, “tall birdie!!”

It’s convenient that the human removed the upper poop tray; not only does this allow more light to enter the cage when I’m inside, it also gives me the opportunity to drop bombs in my water bowl when I’m hanging out on top.

The inside of my playtop cage is nice and roomy (about four times as big as the cage I came with). The human even took the grate out of the bottom, which gives me more space to climb around. She says it’s mostly because cleaning poop off the grate is a pita, but I know she did it because she knows I like to pull on the newspaper.

You can tell my cage is a good size because it doesn’t fit into an SUV at all. It has to be taken apart and strapped to the top of the giant van in pieces in order to be moved from place to place.

Unfortunately, the human hasn’t had time to reassemble my cage since we got back home last night (in fact, she tells me she forgot the screws at the other house), so today I’m stuck in my travel cage again. I’m tired of this. I want to be back in my big cage. Now, please.

  • I this exact same cage for my blue headed pionus..it is the perfect size. I hate scrubbing the grates to and never thought about the light coming into the top! Callie likes to hang upside down on there as well.

  • What an adventure! I bet you are happy to be home so you can see your human more.
You have a very nice cage, Mika! You are a very lucky pi! I hope you are able to move back into it very soon!

  • Oh yes, the update is that I did get to move back into my cage yesterday. I came up and watched my human put the screws back in and inspected her work, interrupting her every couple of minutes with requests for scritches. All is back to normal now. pheww.

  • I have been reading about you and you are such a cutie.

I am wondering what brand of cage that is. I just got a new playstand (off craigslist) and the top looks the same as your cage.
