This Pionus Parrot Loves to Shower!

Our human went away last week to a place called “vacation”. That meant the Stu-monster and I had to go to a bird sitter. It was okay, but the bird sitter did not take me into the shower the way my human usually does. Showers are important for all parrots, but especially dusty ones like Pionus Parrots.

The thing is, I love showers. I would take them every day if the human let me.

I usually get a shower twice a week to help keep my dust down. The routine is that we go into the bathroom and the human puts me on the perch above the sink or on the boing at the far end of where the water comes out. Then she does her thing first. She makes sure not to let any shampoo or soap get on me. Then, when she’s done, I get to go under the water. I stand on a hand-held perch so I can move in and out of the stream. Unlike Stewie, I don’t just want a light misting; I prefer to get right under the water. When I’m ready to get wet, I spread my wings out and stick my tail feathers high in the air. Sometimes I get so excited and lean so far forward I almost flip over the perch.

I also like to drink the warm running water, so the human will make a little fountain with her hand (but not too much because that makes my poops very messy).

The human knows that I’ve gotten a thorough shower, and am nice and clean, when she can see my earholes and the pink skin on my neck. It’s good to get nice and soaked.

Then we get out of the shower and dry off (she towel dries and I air dry).

Here are some photos of me sitting in front of the window after my last shower (the human thinks I look like a wet chicken):
